PTO-SPONSORED ASSEMBLIES

A Brief Description of the Presentations

Character Magic (10-7-09):  Presenter, Patrick Ireland, uses magic with a message to motivate students to make responsible choices, maintain honesty, and treat others and yourself with respect.  The concept of self discipline and consequences is illustrated by connecting pieces of a puzzle.

Catch the Rhythm of Reading (11-20-09):  With the use of ordinary table spoons, presenter, Jim Cruise (AKA The Spoon Man), encourages children to read, while at the same time providing musical entertainment.  A copy of his book Spoon Boy is available to check out in the Village library.

Gemini Music (12-21-09):  Musician Laszlo Slomovits provides multicultural entertainment and lots of holiday cheer that involves all students.

The Diversity Circus (1-12-10):  The month of January often focuses on diversity and multicultural appreciation.  Doug Scheer will help interactively teach children about fairness, awareness, including others, and respect through his presentation of “The Diversity Circus.”  Some highlights include: The Impossible Puzzle, The World’s Strongest Kid, The Amazing Crayon Box, The See-Thru Kid, and The Fearless Lion Tamer.

Toma’s Young Authors Day (3-10-10):  This program begins with an all school assembly by a Mime artist who discusses the difference between writing for the stage and writing for the page.  He also discusses writing structure and inspiration for stories.  Students then return to individual classrooms to write their own stories and the presenter visits classes to assist with their writing.  The day culminates with afternoon sessions where students’ work is celebrated and select stories are acted out by the performer.

Little Creatures (4-20 & 23-10):  Each classroom will be visited by Daniel Briere and his “pets.”  He will bring a 9 ft. python snake, milk snake, tarantula, frog, iguana, blue-tongue skink, turtle, tortoise, alligator, chinchilla, and parrot.  Students will have an opportunity to interact with the live animals and Mr. Dan will share information about the animals’ habitat and food requirements (similar to Science Alive).

Michigan in the Civil War (5-17-10):  The Metroparks Mobile Learning Center will be stationed at the VES parking lot for individual 4th grade classes to experience.  In support of the social studies curriculum, Michigan’s role in the Civil War and related events, including the Underground Railroad, will be presented through role-playing and other activities.

French Voyageurs and the Fur Trade (5-18-10):  The Metroparks Mobile Learning Center will be parked at VES for individual 3rd grade classes to explore information about the Great Lakes fur-trading era.  Emphasis is placed on the everyday life of the voyageur through living history interpretation and the use of furs, trade goods, and other hands-on materials.

Parents are always welcome at PTO sponsored Assemblies.  Please contact the VES office if you have questions about times, locations, etc.  Also, remember to sign in at the office when you arrive!
