Multi-Tiered Systems of Support

Multi-Tiered Systems of Support

MTSS stands for Multi-Tiered System of Supports.  It's the framework used by schools to give targeted supports and interventions to struggling students.  MTSS is designed to help schools identify struggling students early and intervene quickly.  It focuses on the "whole child".  That means the MTSS framework supports academic and social skills growth for our students.  These include academic content knowledge, behavior, social skills, and absenteeism. The different tiers of supports are a critical part of MTSS (Tier 1:  Whole Class / Tier 2:  Small Group Interventions /  Tier 3:  Intensive Individualized Support). MTSS is not a specific curriculum, but a proactive system that includes the following elements:

1) Increasing levels of targeted support for struggling students.
2) Integrated plans that address student academic, behavior and social skills needs.
3) Universal screening.
4) A schoolwide approach to student support, with teachers, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and interventionists working as a team to assess student needs and provide intervention.
5) Professional development so staff can provide interventions and monitor progress more effectively.
6) Use effective strategies at every tier to support students.
